Photo Libraries: Improving Ground Cover in Oklahoma

Close up of Site 1

Site 1 on the Davis Ranch in southeastern Oklahoma
has been out of cultivation for four years. It is a
heavy clay soil, 12 days under water, and grazed
for short periods at low stock density. Despite
additional reseeding in the spring of 1991, plant
density is low and most plants are weeds.

Site 2 Close Up

Site 2 is only 100 feet from Site 1 on the opposite side of a fence.
The only difference between the two sites is that this site has
been grazed for short periods at high stock density over the past
two years. On this site plant density is fair with 60-70% of the
species grasses or legumes. Increased plant cover and increase
in the quality of forage are signs of improved biodiversity and soil health.
