  • Photo Libraries: Reducing Snakeweed

    bowe

In 1986 this pasture on the Bowe's ranch
was 11% snakeweed (a noxious weed
with poor forage for livestock or wildlife
and a sign of poor biodiversity).

In 1990 this same pasture had improved to only
1% snakeweed and now had nine new perennial
grass species in it. This improved livestock and
wildlife forage was a result of Holistic Management
and planned grazing. By using animals to work the
soil with their hooves and fertilize it with their
waste and knock down old plant growth that was
preventing new plant growth, there was an increase
in new plant growth which in turn improved the
effectiveness of the water cycle and mineral cycle
which in turn created more opportunity for biodiversity.
