The Africa Centre for Holistic Management®
In 1992, Holistic Management® International launched the Africa Centre for Holistic Management® in Zimbabwe. Headquartered near Victoria Falls on a 6,500-acre property donated to HMI and the Africa Centre jointly, known as Dimbangombe Ranch, our Africa Centre staff oversee two major efforts.
First is management of the ranch as a Holistic Management® learning site that demonstrates how livestock can be used to restore deteriorating landscapes and lost wildlife habitat.
Second is the Dimbangombe College of Wildlife, Agriculture and Conservation Management, which provides Holistic Management® training to the local community through a Community-Based Conservation Program, as well as vocational training for jobs in the tourism and safari industries.
The following represents a sampling of our work on behalf of, and in partnership with, international development agencies and agricultural managers and educators.
Purpose and Goals
Since its inception, the Africa Centre
has worked to the following long-term objectives:
1. Establish an international training facility and learning site--one that serves as a working example of Holistic Management® in practice on the land and in local communities--and one that brings governments, scientists and local communities together, working in collaboration at all levels.
2. Empower the people in the neighboring Hwange Communal Lands to become self-sufficient and to achieve a long-term sustainable future of their own design, through community training in Holistic Management®. (Some 145,000 people live in the Hwange Communal Lands; we are currently providing training and coaching through our staff and village-based facilitators to more than 5,000 people in dozens of villages).
3. Restore desertifying land in Zimbabwe and develop a model program that can be implemented anywhere in Africa.
4. Enhance the survival of threatened wildlife populations by working to restore damaged habitat, and to improve the quality of life for the people living among and around them.
Research and document the successful use of livestock and wild ungulates to ‘recycle’
old vegetation--as an alternative to fire, which is damaging both land and wildlife, creating serious atmospheric pollution, and contributing to global climate change.
Dimbangombe Conservation Safaris
Dimbangombe Ranch also offers Conservation Safaris popular with wildlife enthusiasts, environmentalists, and photographers. The safaris provide ecotourism opportunities for the villagers, opportunities for cross-cultural exchange, and a destination resort for the discerning, ecoconscious traveler. Board of Trustees
The Africa Centre is a registered education and welfare organization in Zimbabwe and has its own Board of Trustees, including among them all five chiefs resident in the Hwange Communal Lands. Africa Centre staff report to Holistic Management® International through Allan Savory who sits on the Africa Centre’s Board.
