U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management

At the 90,000-acre West Elk Grazing Allotment and Wilderness Area in Colorado, which stands as an example of progressive and innovative management, the Allotment Management Plan is based on Holistic Management®.

Holistic grazing planning has resolved environmental conflicts and garnered the support and enthusiasm of permittees while fostering abundant and diverse flora and fauna, clean air and water, and stable soils, with attendant economic and aesthetic benefits for the local population.

The allotment’s on-the-ground accomplishments were recognized when the Colorado Section of the Society for Range Management selected the West Elk Grazing Pool as the recipient for its “Excellence in Rangeland Conservation Award” in 1996, and again in 1997 when the Chief of the U.S. Forest Service selected the West Elk Pool for the “Out-Service Award for Excellence in Range Management.”

USDA Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education

The USDA Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program funded our training of trainers program in 2001 at the request of a consortium of universities, including Cornell, the University of Massachusetts and the State University of New York (SUNY), to ensure that Resource Conservation & Development, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and Extension service staff members and other agricultural advisors in the northeastern US can train others in Holistic Management® decision making.

The North-Central SARE program funded a similar training program for that region. These programs have proven extremely valuable to agricultural educators, equipping them to better serve their clients with a whole system / whole farm approach while addressing the unique challenges and assets of each operation.
