...so when we came to understand the role that soils could have in sucking
carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere... and the benefits that has – you increase fertility, you increase water holding capacity– it has these multiple benefits.
...through practices like planned grazing, you're using animals to actually improve the land— if you think about the past (on the great
plains of the United States for example) when you had large herds of animals moving across the land, you also had grass that was chest-high, and there was a reason for that.
We came here in 1979, and it was totally barren — had been abandoned for 15 years. There was nothing but moss on the ground ... it wasn't even growing grass anymore, the fertility was so poor.
We're coming up on our 30th year, and here, we now have lush pasture ... this has been grazed (using a grazing plan) since about April— four or five rotations through this field right here. The whole ball game's to have your land producing the way it should be producing, and not being raped all the time... you know, not taking things out of it all the time, but putting things back...
(I look around and I think) "oh my gosh — we're building. We're building soil ... we're building life".
